Narrative and Characters

The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is the sequal to The Princess Diaries. It is a rom-com, family film.


Narrative Theory: Todorov


Equilibrium: Princess Mia has just graduated and she has flown over to Genovia for her 21st birthday and she's about to take the position as Queen of Genovia. Princess Mia is just getting used to living in the Genovian palace and she's getting used to her new life.


Disruption: Viscount Mabrey is planning on stealing her royal position and he tells everyone that Mia isn't eligible to be Queen unless she gets married within 30 days. So Mia begins to search for her possible husband and soon becomes engaged to the Duke of Kenilworth. Meanwhile Viscount Mabrey and Lord Nicholas Devereaux plot against the engagement and try to ruin Princess Mia and the Duke of Kenilworth's relationship.


Restoration: Mia says she wants to become Queen without a husband but Mabrey objects, saying his nephew should be King. However Nicholas declines the crown, and Mia abolishes the marriage law. Clarisse and Joe end up getting married and Nicholas confesses his love for Mia. Mia is finally crowned Queen of Genovia.


Characters Theory: Propp


Hero: Andrew Jacoby - He is who Mia chooses as her husband and even when he realises that he doesn't love her, he still says he will marry her because he promised he would and a gentleman never breaks his promise.
Villain: Viscount Mabrey - He is plotting to ruin Mia's engagement so that he can steal her royal position.
Princess: Mia Thermopolis - She's in search of a husband so that she can become Queen. She's the main character and the whole film is based around her.
The false hero: Nicholas Devereaux - He flirts with Mia at first to make her like him so that he can steal her royal position and ruin her engagement but then he ends up falling in love with her for real.
The donor: Queen Clarisse Renaldi - She tells Mia to follow her heart and find her true love instead of marrying Andrew Jacoby. She tells Mia not to make the same mistake she did.
The princess' father: Philipe - he was the late King of Genovia but he has passed away
The helper: Lilly Moscovitz - Lilly is Mia's best friend and she helps her to find the right husband in the first place and she supports Mia throughout the whole film.
